Notman helped build the West Indian Company Dock and was the Superintendent for the Royal English Steamship Packet Company. Villa Notman is one of sixteen existing houses the island built of yellow ballast brick which was used to stabilize ships traveling from Europe to the West Indies in combination with handsome native stone, augite andesite. The house has an exceptional cast iron double balcony imported from New Orleans. The house also has a fragrance garden with Bay Rum trees, Plumeria, used in making perfume.Villa Notman was also known as the Mark St. Thomas a favorite guest house restaurant and bar.
